Centres for Doctoral Training in SDGs bring together diverse areas of expertise to train engineers and scientists with the skills, knowledge and confidence to tackle today's evolving issues, and future challenges. They also provide a supportive and exciting environment for students, create new working cultures, build relationships between teams in universities and forge lasting links with industry. It provides training for cohorts of research students within focused research areas, and concentrated on academic- and/or industrially‐relevant research topics. Centres for Doctoral Training in SDGs was established with a vision to facilitate participatory and sustainable development processes that would make human settlements equitable living environments. We aim to be a global Centre of Excellence for improving accountability and governance in the area of environment and sustainable development. We will develop high quality products in training and research to enrich environment audit through an inter-disciplinary approach enabled by valuable partnerships. We see the interconnected nature of the ‘sustainability challenge’ as central to our work; we attempt-through our projects, interdisciplinary teaching and ongoing working groups-to better understand the connections between environment, economic prosperity and social justice. Centres for Doctoral Training in SDGs supports an integrated development approach for the improvement of living conditions in the slums by convergence of various local initiatives, national and regional programmes in the fields of urban environment, social and technical infrastructure, poverty alleviation, education and health.
