Plant Tissue Culture Facility

A Plant tissue culture laboratory is a hygienically sealed space where little plants are grown in a climate chamber or growth chamber under controlled conditions for research, breeding, or multiplication. It consists of media rooms, cutting rooms, growth chambers, and a washing area. School of Applied Sciences has a state-of-the-art Tissue culture facility which is being utilized for micro-propagation of endemic and/ or endangered medicinal & aromatic plant species, embryo rescue and regeneration, haploid culture, protoplast culture, induction of somatic embryogenesis, bioproduction of secondary metabolites through cell culture/ hairy root cultures, and for creation of somaclonal variations. Using this facility micropropagation protocols for medicinal, aromatic, and economic plants have been developed. We have a spacious culture room with tile flooring and a hardening and acclimatization unit. The following equipment are installed here with all required lab wares:

  • A. Minor types of equipment:
    • Weighing balance
    • Magnetic stirrer
    • pH meter
    • Hot air oven
    • Microwave
  • B. Major types of equipment:
    • Horizontal autoclave
    • Laminar airflow along

All Faculty and Research scholars of the institute can use this central facility to carry out research in tissue culture for mass propagation and related areas. The students of relevant UG and PG courses are exposed rigorously to the tools and techniques of plant tissue culture as part of their course curriculum. Different techniques in plant tissue culture may offer certain advantages over traditional methods of propagation. They learn about various types of medium used methods of sterilization, types of explants, growth regulators, growth conditions; sub culturing, hardening, and acclimatization.
