Industrial Mentoring Program

The Industry Mentoring Program provides a unique opportunity for students to directly connect with industry representatives in a mentor-mentee program. Industry mentors will interact with student mentees to provide them with a deeper insight into professional environments and their future careers. This program gives students the opportunity to develop an understanding of real life in the engineering industry and the range of opportunities in the field. They can also learn from the experiences of industry professionals and their diverse career paths. Build a strong foundation for your future career. During this program, you will be able to build a professional network through valuable networking events and improve your employability and soft skills. Role of Industrial Mentors is primary responsibilities of the industrial mentor are to provide scholars with insight and exposure to industry and help them understand industry expectations. This opportunity enables the scholars to see and experience processes first-hand and helps them tie their classroom knowledge to the real world, thus bridging the gap between perception and reality, further solidifying their engineering identity. Throughout the semester, industrial mentors meet monthly with an assigned upper class peer mentor and a team of 3-5 scholars. During these meetings, industrial mentors share their educational and career experience, answer any academic and career preparation questions/concerns the students may have, provide professional guidance through resume review and interview preparation, share insight into their organization, and any other information deemed necessary in supporting the success of our scholars.

SGVU students have the opportunity to participate in our Industrial Mentorship Program that will kick off on industry exposure. The structure of the mentoring program will be such to allow for individual goals to be set and met within each mentor/mentee pair with the commitment being a monthly 1 hour (or less) meeting (can be in person, virtual, or by phone) as scheduled. During these calls/meetings, Industry mentors will work with the students on specific topics of interest as set by the student, and could include some of the following topics below. If schedules allow, and interest exists, we also encourage mentees to schedule site visits of their mentors’ companies to enable them to gain a broader perspective of that particular industry.
